Soul orbs can be secured or denied by shooting them. They create a second contest for income after a unit dies.
In practice
Keep ammunition ready when a trooper is about to die. Decide whether you can safely claim the orb or need to avoid the enemy’s fire.

What happens if a friendly flying orb expires?
The owning side receives it. Shooting secures the reward earlier and prevents the opponent from claiming that flying orb first.
Are enemy ground orbs denyable too?
No. Their faint ground pickups cannot be claimed by your team; keep the distinction from flying orbs.
